'Was That Not a Show?' The Reason a Shortened Fixture Deserved Its Status as a Genuine Cricket Test.

Within a showcase on the elevated floor of the MCG rests a vibrant pink suit performed in by the entertainer. His performance in front of a hundred thousand attendees was hailed as a major hit.

You might not like his music. Perhaps you believe he is the finest offering to music in history. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, conceding that some hits are fantastic while others are poor.

The point being is that amusement can be delivered diversely. You like what you like. There is no one way to create literature or even five-day cricket.

The Incomparable Variety of Test Cricket

The traditional format boasts incomparable variety. It is hard to think of another sport where the outcome is so dependent on external factors.

The elements, the time of day, the ball – the list is endless. Crucially is the playing surface.

If the format is a form of art, the strip is the foundation on which the cricketers create their art.

An Abstract Contest: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between the old rivals was the game deconstructed, the traditional sport taken to pieces and reassembled in a bizarre shape.

Let's be clear, this isn't a justification of the wicket which resulted in a victory and the second two-day Test of the Ashes battle.

Allowing 10mm of grass on the surface, causing 36 wickets tumbling in less than a brief period, is not an even battle between batter and bowler.

A Varied History: The Nature of Test Cricket

But any suggestion this was a inferior show, one that should be qualified as not a proper Test, is wide of the mark.

The format is a diverse canvas, 2,615 parts and ongoing. At times, as witnessed recently, the ball behaves unpredictably for the pace bowlers. Other times, it spins sharply on a dust bowl. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it bounces unevenly.

The thrillers are even more exciting due to the time devoted in other matches.

Adaptation: The Core Skill

Certain variables are embraced more readily than others.

The contention in during the match was that the balance was skewed excessively towards the fielding side. That the skilled individuals were unable from playing their natural game.

The format is about finding solutions – reading the conditions and adapting effectively. The best individual contributions were made by recognized batters. One line-up committed more errors than the other, and thus ended up second best.

Pure Elation: The Fan Perspective

Attempt to convince the supporters who have endured a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

In one section of the ground, countless fans celebrated and sang their songs, producing a carnival vibe in a stronghold of sport.

There was hope as the attack excelled, impetus when the top order fought back, and pure joy when the victory was secured.

Contrasting Examples: The Variety of Test Matches

The venue has a history with difficult wickets. Eight years ago, a game there featured a pitch with the excitement of a a non-event.

That match was a slog, with few wickets and interminable tedium. The latest encounter and that previous match are polar opposites of the range – one is not more ideal, yet significance can be found in them.

At this stage into the ongoing battle, it is the quick finishes that will be most remembered in the history books.

"Far from being the demise of the format at all," observed a former player. "The people who have been lucky enough to see these two days have been treated to some genuine drama. A unique show."

Small Victories: Building for the Future

In the lead-in to this match, the leader spoke like a man carrying the enormous pressure on his back.

The team responded for him, restoring the joy to his countenance.

Different players delivered with key contributions. These are small positives, hardly enough to secure long-term success, but something to develop from.

Ultimately, this Melbourne victory takes its place among other historic performances in dead rubbers.

As the fans departed into a beautiful night, the team assembled on the field to begin their own celebrations.

Celebrate the win, men. This victory was hard-fought.
