The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – really, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably definitely not the account of a powerful ruler arising; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and clear truth that the Savior of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it means both modesty and faith, a combination that serious US believers ought to accept.
