The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
