New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
