British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
